Turn Memories into Art: How to Make a Photo Montage in PicCollage

A two-panel image showing two different photo montages. The first montage on the left has a travel theme with a variety of photos from Vietnam, including street scenes, a temple, food, and the word "**VIETNAM**" spelled out with different letters. The second montage on the right is a summer-themed collage with beach photos, animated stickers of a camera and doughnuts, and the word "**SUMMER**" spelled with cutout letters.

After a month in Vietnam, you might come home with 300+ photos of bustling street markets, steaming bowls of pho, and friendly faces you met along the way – too many to share, but too meaningful to hide. How do you share your favorites without being overwhelming? That’s when photo montages come in – a way to layer these moments together so you can share the whole journey, not just pieces of it.

What Is a Photo Montage?

A photo montage is a creative technique where you cut out, layer, and blend multiple photos into one design. Think of it as collaging with photos – you’re taking pieces from different images and combining them to tell a story or create a mood.

Unlike regular collages where photos sit side by side, photo montages flow together seamlessly. Elements from one photo might blend into another, creating that dreamy, artistic look you see all over Instagram and Pinterest.

How to Make a Photo Montage with PicCollage

Ready to create your first photo montage? Making a photo montage is easier than you might think. Here’s our simple 4-step process that anyone can follow:

Step 1: Choose Your Background Photos

Start by picking photos that will serve as your base. Look for images with consistent colors or themes from your camera roll. For example, if you’re creating a photo montage from travels to Vietnam, you might notice lots of green – from lush rice paddies to tropical leaves to street-side plants.

Pick these green-heavy photos as your base: maybe a shot of leaves scattered on the ground, a close-up of tropical foliage, or that artsy photo of tree reflections in water. These semi-abstract images work perfectly because you won’t mind covering parts of them up later.

Step 2: Add Your Photos

Now add all the photos you want to feature in your montage. It helps to organize them by topic – group your food shots, people pictures, and landscape photos together.

In our Vietnam example, we grouped photos by street scenes with bustling markets and motorbikes, food shots of pho and banh mi, locals, and travellers strolling through. Having your photos organized this way makes it easier to place them strategically in your montage later.

Step 3: Use the Cutout Tool

Here’s where the magic happens! Double-tap any photo and select “Cutout.” You have four options:

Cut out the most important elements from each photo – the parts that really tell your story. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different cutout options in the app to see what works best for your photos!

Step 4: Blend Everything Together

Arrange your cutout photos so they blend together seamlessly. Use smaller cutouts to cover straight borders, giving the photo montage a seamless, effortless look.

When you’ve got the design just how you want it, add stickers to decorate. In our case, we used the “Alphabet” sticker pack to title our photo montage with the location of our trip- tying our whole story together.

Photo Montage Ideas for Instagram & Stories

There’s something about layered photos that makes people want to keep looking. When you create a photo montage for Instagram, you’re giving friends multiple stories to discover in a single post, and that’s exactly what makes them stop mid-scroll.

Don’t want to build from scratch? Browse our “Scrapbook” template category for designs that already have that layered, montage feel. Simply replace the placeholder photos with your own and add extra elements like stickers or text to make it your own.

Here are some ideas to get your creativity flowing:

Transform Travel Memories into a Montage

Travel photos have this natural advantage – they already tell a story. Here are our tips for turning your travel memories into a trip collage that feels cohesive rather than random:

FAQs About Montage Sizes, Exports & Tips

It really depends on where you want to share it! For Instagram posts, you have two options: square format (1080 x 1080 pixels) for the classic look, or portrait format (1080 x 1350 pixels) which takes up more screen space. If you are making an Instagram story, select “Story” in PicCollage’s canvas options for the perfect vertical format. For phone wallpapers, just select “Wallpaper” in PicCollage’s canvas options.

Easy! Just tap the save icon and choose HD format for the crispest results. This way your photo montage will look amazing whether you’re posting it online or even printing it out to hang on your wall.

We’d suggest starting with 5-8 photos for your first montage – it’s enough to tell a good story without feeling overwhelming. As you get more comfortable with the process, feel free to add more elements. The secret is finding that sweet spot where everything feels balanced rather than cluttered.

Think soft and subtle! Photos with gentle textures, gradients, or patterns work beautifully as backgrounds. Nature shots are your best friend here – grass, water, cloudy skies, or even tree bark create perfect canvases. Just avoid photos with lots of detail or important subjects since you’ll be covering parts of them up.

Explore our “Scrapbook” Content Collection in the app to find several background packs that work perfectly as bases for your photo montages, plus cute stickers to add those finishing touches!

Photo montages are one of those things that just get better the more you play around with them. Grab some photos from your last trip or even just this past week and see what stories they tell when you layer them together. The best part? There’s no wrong way to do it.
