ok so elliott walked down the hall to his locker. libby sat on the field bc she did idk

Silas sits at a picnic table, shuffling through his papers.

libby went to get food bc she forgot to her breakfast. she saw silas and remembered him because he dropped his stuff.

Silas looks up and sees libby in the distance and waves, grabbing his stuff in a hurry and shoving them into his bag. “you’re the Libby right? the one who saw me drop my papers?” he calls to her

libby picked up an apple and bit into it. “i think so, yeah. what was your name again?”

Silas laughed to himself and also picked an apple “im silas—“ he bites into the apple and grimaces “that’s... that’s sour” he complains, spitting out the piece he bit

libby examined silas. “silas. yeah, i remember. what were those papers for again? did you say spanish?”

Silas shakes his head, rolling the apple around his hand. “it’s just transfer papers, I honestly haven’t gotten my class work yet, im sure I’ll have plenty” he says sarcastically. “has there been anything major I missed?”

“hmm,” says libby. “not that i can recall. everyone’s just skipping, really. i’m new too, so i don’t really know the friend groups and all that.”

He nods “im fine with skipping, I was walking around and there was barely anyone around— on that note, do you know where anyone is? it’s so quiet out here” he laughs, there honestly was just the sound of outside, it felt like a library.

she laughs. “yeah, it’s empty, like, 80% of the time. you get used to it. i think.” she takes another bite of the apple. “so, where you from?”

Silas picks up an orange instead and starts peeling it “a town a few hours south of here that isn’t so secluded.” he flicks orange peels at her shoes “what about you?”

“england, if the accent didn’t give it away,” she replies and nudges the orange peel away from her feet. “very exotic, i know.”

Silas grins “yeah, I had a feeling” he says with a laugh “I dont know much about Europe so I wouldnt know if different countries have similar accents or not” he finishes peeling and flicks them onto the ground again “and yes, in my opinion England is quite exotic”

“hmph,” says libby and smiles, crouching down to pick up the peel. “if you like permanent grey and drizzle, i suppose.” she stands back up straight. “i assume parts of it are quite nice, like the country and there was this castle ruin near where i used to live.”

Silas’ eyes widen and he nods “yeah, that’s pretty awesome. I’d go to England for some castle ruins, that would be interesting to explore.” he pops an orange piece in his mouth “all I had was a small town and fields around it, not some literal castle ruin”

“boo for you,” says libby, the corner of her mouth pulling up into a smirk. “it was pretty much overrun with annoying small children, but you could climb up the walls and sit up at the top, which was nice. small towns are cute though, i think.”

Silas rolls his eyes and kicks dust at Libby “cute, as in everyone knew everyone and after awhile bored you to death, you mean” he replies “that’s pretty much why I’m here”

libby sits down on one of the tables behind her, giving silas the finger casually. “yes, boohoo, small town boy feels trapped in his small town world, we’ve heard it before,” she jokes. “is it really that bad in small towns?”

Silas scoffs and returns the favor “ok foreigner, I’d like to hear your story” he shoots back, crossing his arms. “and it’s just dull, nothing was engaging so I left. end of story.” he says bluntly.

Silas glances at her and eats another orange slice “no, I’d love to hear all about your life story” he says sarcastically, chewing. “yes, why you left England”

libby throws her apple into the bin. “it’s quite boring, actually. my mum got promoted and transferred here, so me and my brother had to come with, seeing as neither of us are adults and she is our legal guardian.”

Silas nods “yeah, that is pretty simple” he agrees. he fidgets with the orange, digging his nails into a slice “honestly, even that small town had more people than there are here, this is disappointing” he says, annoyed.

“i mean, i’ll take this over england. have you met a roadman before?”

Silas frowns, a smile evident. “sounds like an England thing, I dont have idea what that is” he says, curious. “if I was to guess it sounds like a businessman honestly” he laughs

she laughs pleasantly. “no, they’re teenage boys who are obsessed with vaping, puffer jackets, the full tracksuit set and gold chains. they look like idiots and they’re constantly threatening to stab you, unless they like you and then they’re just as bad but they bully you just a little bit more.” she rolls her eyes. “i’d gladly take a school with just you and me over that.”

Silas laughs, leaning his head back “that sounds like a proper hęłł right there” he replies “I gotta agree with you on that one, I wouldnt last a month in a place like that, I cant even imagine it” he throws orange rind in the ground and glances at the school “as you said earlier, I have a feeling we won’t be in class all that often, so this school is looking better and better” he adds

libby follows his gaze. “yeah, i think you’re right. and eh, i dunno, you might’ve. not everyone was like that, only a couple of big friend groups in the year. everyone else is either really snotty and greasy, or pretty decent. the trick is finding the right crowd, really.”

Silas shrugs, grinning “im not sure I could stand that accent for a whole school year, I’d either go insane or start talking like that myself” he laughs and tries to copy her accent “im sure I would fit right in” he says, trying his hardest to sound like a brit.

libby tries her best to look unimpressed and deadpans, “it’s chewsday innit.”

Silas glances back at Libby “I reckon it is” he replies, laughing. “I forgot my homework, bloody hēłł” he leans against the table, impressed with himself.

“eh, the teachers will get over it if you don’t show up, i’m sure,” she says and grins. “there’s a large town nearby. i know you hâte the small ones.”

Silas nod, exaggerating “no, the small towns häte me, I swear” he says loudly “im fine with going into the large town” he replies, standing up and stretching.

I forgot why I avoided stepping out of my comfort zone, to spend time with people I’ve known. And I seem to keep forgetting how I act when I’m around them. It’s like my personality is on default, even after I’ve spent the vexatious months of Covid reworking my personality into someone I know I can be. I want to be. But then as soon as I’m faced with a situation, it all just evades my mind’s thoughts, and I’m back to square one. To the person I can’t stand being.
