I read Mysterious Benedict Society (well written, and a LOT of plot twists), Animal Farm was sad (it was a satire/allegory for the Russian revolution), The Selection looked good, I need to read The Outsiders, DON'T READ THE BOOK THEIF UNLESS YOU'RE PREPARED TO CRY, The Hobbit was better than the movie, The Giver series is really sad and sometimes deep, and I've heard Mortal Instruments/Divergent/Hunger Games are all good series. Katherine Alaska and Erin Hunter are good authors if you like animal books, but Stuart Gibbs has a really casual and fun action-type writing. If you want something deeper try Fahrenheit 451.
