Her punishment would of lasted longer, but— Jade finished applying the makeup and smiled brightly in the mirror. She then grabbed her things and began to drive to a cafe.

jade looked up at the mayoral office as lauren looked for the key. knowing how politicians were, she had a feeling that a lot of things will still be unanswered. jade began to walk into the building when she had a thought, “do you think the police are trying to cover this up?” she asked layne in a low voice, “like, do you think they’re being paid to do so?”

okay hear me out: i read the title of this originally as like tears like crying, but what if it’s like tears as in like tears in clothing. like tears of truth could be referencing how much misinformation and lies are prominent in this town and the truth is beginning to show through

Okay but like it could have a double meaning because that is a fantastic interpretation but I was also thinking tears if truth would imply that things would come out at the funeral when people are emotional about the whole thing

“even if they didn’t know anything— something should of been said by now. something like a…if you saw something suspicious report it…something, anything,” Jade said, beginning to look through the cabinets. She wasn’t surprised to find nothing in there. She then turned her attention to the computer.

Lauren looked around the room. “I need a password.” she snapped while thinking. “what’s the town zip code?” she mumbled to herself. she put it in with the mayor’s initials. “in,” she whispered and went to his files. “these need a password too.” she tried the computer password. “republicans are so dumb.” she looked at the tabs and her jaw dropped. “Esterville killings 1863.” she scrolled. “Esterville killings 1883.” she furrowed her eyebrows. “1903. 1923. 1943. 1963. ‘83.” she scrolled to the end of the list. “Esterville killings 2003.” she sat back in the chair, her mouth agape.

Lauren put the key back in the gnome and ran to the car, getting back in the passenger’s seat. “I think now, we need to focus on getting to the bottom of this card.” she pulled out her phone and examined the picture.
