A WAY TO LOOK AT THIS: she had been in isolation so long so that she may not kill anyone (she put herself there as she realized and could not cope with herself being a murder) and slowly becomes insane. The bird was not real, only a part of herself she hates (her attractive voice that killed men), manifested in front of her by her insanity. She knows she cannot help but speak. The bird is lead to its demise. She has killed herself with the power she killed others with. She is curious in shadows because she does not have anymore spacial intelligence (the sign to the reader she is crazy), she is a sea nymph. She is only day dreaming of being on land where the shadows act differently, and she could not hurt anyone. How attractiveness can be deadly is something we should never forget. The unorthodox side of "beauty". A strange illusion created by this strange light and shadows we see.
